Highlights from 2023-24
Industrial design graduate student Uzoma Ndulue was one of the three large-prize winners at the biannual Demo Day, hosted by ASU’s Venture Devils. Out of 73 ambitious ventures pitched to more than 300 in-person and virtual attendees, she won $25,000 to continue funding her fashion line, “Good Road Collection.” Read more about her story.
Students and faculty in The Design School presented work and received recognition at the annual Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) in New York City. Chunyao Liu, assistant professor of interior design, and several of her students were awarded best presentation and first place in the student design competition. Read more.
Thirty students in The Design School traveled to Hawaii in a unique studio course to create new ways of saving the islands’ dying coral. The master’s degree students spent a week in O‘ahu as part of a Global Engagement Studio, a semester-long course led by Michelle Fehler, a clinical associate professor in The Design School and affiliate in The Biomimicry Center; Darren Petrucci, the Suncor Professor of Architecture in The Design School, and Hazal Gumus-Ciftci, an assistant professor of industrial design. The course is a partnership between The Design School and the College of Global Futures, and the transdisciplinary project included not just the various design specialties but also sustainability and biology. ASU Library spotighted its Design and the Arts Special Collections, which preserves a rich archive of architectural drawings, presentation boards, monographs, serials and audiovisual materials relating to the design, development and evolution of modern architecture in the Southwest. The collection includes architecture-related items and original source materials from several innovators and leaders in architecture, design and desert modernism in Arizona and elsewhere in the country.
