Ceramics and the desert
In a KJZZ interview, artist Sarah Zapata discussed her Spring 2024 exhibition “Beneath the Breath of the Sun” at the ASU Art Museum, inspired by the desert and ceramics, emphasizing textile art’s accessibility and its role in exploring cultural and environmental themes. Listen to the interview.
New curator
ASU Art Museum named Alana Hernandez as senior curator. Hernandez serves as a member of the museum’s leadership team, advancing exhibitions, curatorial strategy and public realm initiatives within and beyond the museum. Prior to her new role at the museum, Hernandez served as executive director and curator of CALA Alliance.
Independence days
ASU Art Museum celebrated its fifth annual Independence Day Celebration to honor the contributions and culture of the Mexican and Mexican-American communities as well as acknowledge independence days across the Americas. In partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico, CALA Alliance and COVIDLatino, the event featured El Grito from the Consul Armando Esparza, art-making activities, workshops with artist Aileen Martinez, lotería games, face painting, salsa lessons with ASU Salsa Club, music from DJ CRVNT3S and food from Salsa Bites.
