Outstanding designs at LA Memorial Coliseum

On June 5, at the iconic LA Memorial Coliseum, the Central City Association (CCA) of Los Angeles hosted the 28th annual Treasures of Los Angeles. For the occasion, ASU FIDM presented 12 outstanding designs by ’24 BA in fashion design graduates: Madison Nelson and Gifty Ulinwa; the visionary “Fellini Collection” by faculty member Galina Mihaleva; and a trio of dazzling Catrina costumes by Lily Martinez, a toy/fashion/costume designer who graduated from legacy FIDM in 1998 and served as creative director for Barbie for many years before striking out on her own. ASU FIDM Museum

ASU FIDM Museum featured two celebrated exhibitions during the 2023-24 academic year. The “Poor Things” exhibition invited guests to experience the costumes from the 2023 Searchlight Pictures film of the same name, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, written by Tony McNamara and starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott and Jerrod Carmichael. The exhibition showcased the film’s unique, hand-crafted costumes created by costume designer Holly Waddington, who gave ASU FIDM students a special tour of the show and spent time answering their questions. The “Art of Costume Design in Film” exhibition featured the best costumes from a variety of films released in 2023, including all five Academy Award nominees for costume design: “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Napoleon” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
