New Gallery 100 at Mirabella

School of Art’s Gallery 100 relocated to a new home inside Mirabella at ASU, a brand new high-rise for seniors. Established in 2003, the gallery serves as the primary venue for undergraduate student group exhibitions in all media. The gallery is operated by student gallery attendants and maintained by the galleries director, gallery technician and the undergraduate students during their group exhibition period. Weekly exhibitions and receptions help support the research, teaching and public service functions of the school.

“Women Shifting a Transnational Gaze”

School of Art alumni M. Jenea Sanchez and Gabriela Muñoz were invited by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art to participate in a critical engagement with SMoCA’s Collection for the exhibition Division of Labor: Women Shifting a Transnational Gaze. Beginning with a selection of nearly 20 works chosen through the unifying context of labor and the gaze, the artists have invited long-term collaborators to create new works following an historical continuum through a collaborative process foundational to their artistic practice. The group of 10 female artists offer a perspective on labor in connection to feminisms, identity, equity and the gaze that reaches across the United States/Mexico border, according to SMoCA.

#TheMaskedPortraitProject

Emily Vance, a Herberger Online student studying digital photography in the School of Art, launched #TheMaskedPortraitProject as a way to give back to her community through art while also documenting the pandemic in a positive way. “I am a major supporter of wearing masks to protect others and I believe that doing so, even when it is hot and uncomfortable, is a way to show kindness, compassion, and love . . . wearing a mask doesn’t have to be sad or depressing. In fact, it really can be the opposite. Wearing a mask is one of the easiest ways to spread kindness and that is something that should be highlighted and celebrated.”
