Faculty excellence
School of Art faculty continue to excel in their fields, with several receiving national recognition during the 2023-24 school year. Associate Director and Professor Cristóbal Martínez and Associate Professor Margarita Cabrera were both named United States Artist Fellows. USA Fellowships, a nomination-based program, are annual, one-time $50,000 awards recognizing compelling artists and cultural practitioners working in the United States and its island jurisdictions, in all disciplines, at every stage of their career. The National Art Education Association named Cala Coats, assistant professor of art education, as the recipient of the 2024 Mac Arthur Goodwin Award for Distinguished Service Within the Profession. This prestigious award, determined through a peer review of nominations, recognizes outstanding achievement, contribution and service in previous years to the field of art education. Coats was presented with the award during the NAEA 2024 National Convention in Minneapolis. Chelsea Haines, associate professor, was awarded an Arts Writers Grant by the Andy Warhol Foundation. Haines, an art historian and curator, is writing an article “Transatlantic Solidarities: Gershon Knispel in Brazil” will examine public artworks Gershon Knispel made in Brazil between 1957 and 1964, when the military coup compelled his return to Israel.
