Extreme heat

Ariane Middel, an associate professor in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering, is part of a team of researchers working on a four-year, $2 million National Science Foundation project to better quantify the impact of heat on the human body. The team shared some of its first results where they pioneered better measurements of the heat’s effect on the human body with a customized outdoor thermal manikin, called ANDI, coupled with a state-of-the-art mobile biometeorological station developed by Middel’s team, called MaRTy. Middel was also part of a group of researchers that won the 2024 AAG Media Achievement Award from the American Association of Geographers for their work in addressing the critical challenges of extreme heat.
